JAPAN DAY @ Central Park

This weekend I had the pleasure of joining in as a volunteer at one of the booths for JAPAN DAY in Central Park!

For those of you who may not know, JAPAN DAY is a afternoon festival that has taken place in Central Park for the past 5 years. The fesitval showcases Japanese culture and features free cultural entertainment performances, free food, Japanese language games, and lots more to enjoy.

The mission statement of the event is as follows:

JAPAN DAY – MISSION
1) to build bridges of cultural understanding between the people of Japan and the U.S.
2) to show the local Japanese community’s appreciation toward their home city, New York.
3) to facilitate stronger grassroots connections within the local Japanese community

Mayu and I were invited to be a part of the volunteer team at a food booth. As you can imagine, the food booths are extremely popular and tend to be a lot of work! Of course, that meant we were busy all day but, we were glad to have warm weather and an eager crowd. The booth was called "SANUKI UDON" and we passed out over 2500 free bowls of udon (as pictured below).

I love JAPAN day because I get to be around others like me, who are interested in Japanese culture, language, and tradition -- just like me :-).
